Ford Fusion: Automatic Transmission External Controls - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission – 6F35 / Selector Lever Cable Bushing. Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and apply the parking brake.

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

  1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission manual lever.

  1. Remove the selector lever cable retaining clip bolt.

  1. Release the selector lever clip and detach the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable bracket.

  1. NOTE: 2013 model year vehicles only. The selector lever cable bushing is taller than the replacement bushing.

    Using a 15mm shallow socket on the bottom of the selector lever cable end, press the bushing out with straight jaw adjustable pliers.

  1. NOTE: 2014-2020 model year vehicles only.

    Using a 5mm shallow socket on top of the bushing and a 15mm shallow socket on the bottom of the selector lever cable end, press the bushing out with straight jaw adjustable pliers.

  1. Visually check the selector lever cable end for any signs of damage and replace if necessary.

Installation

  1. NOTE: Do not use any grease to install the selector lever cable bushing. The selector lever cable bushing must be installed dry.

    Using only your hands, install the new selector lever cable bushing.

  1. Attach the selector lever cable to the selector lever cable bracket.

  1. Install the selector lever cable retaining clip bolt.
    Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

  1. Using the diagnostic scan tool, select the cable adjustment mode.
  1. NOTE: S flashes simultaneously with either D or N on the GSM.

    Press D on the GSM.

  1. NOTE: Verify D is illuminated on the IPC.


    Position the manual control lever in D.
    1. Rotate the manual control lever counterclockwise until it stops.
    1. Rotate the manual control lever 3 detents into D.

  1. Unlock the adjuster.
    1. Move the slide to the left.
    1. While holding the slide, position the adjuster lock upward.

  1. Connect the selector lever cable to the transmission manual lever.

  1. Snap the adjuster lock into place.

  1. Install the new cap onto the selector lever cable adjuster. Clip one side into the adjuster body and then slide the other onto the housing until it snaps into place. The protective cap should cover the bushing and the terminal end of the adjuster.

  1. Press P on the GSM.

  1. Clear any DTCs.
  1. Shift the transmission through the ranges starting in P, then R, then N, then D, then N, then R and then back to P.
  1. Check for DTCs.
  1. Disconnect the scan tool.
  1. Install the air cleaner assembly.

  1. Verify the vehicle only starts in P and N and the reverse lamps illuminate in R.
